Thai sex show owner arrested after Rihanna visit

Bangkok (AFP) - Thai authorities said Monday they had arrested the owner of a sex show visited by pop icon Rihanna -- the latest crackdown inadvertently triggered by the singer's tweets.

The bar owner on the island of Phuket has been charged in connection with the lewd performance, local district chief Veera Kerdsirimongkol told AFP.

"It was the result of the visit by Rihanna. The authorities will be more strict towards inappropriate shows or wildlife attractions," he said.

Thai tourist officials were left red-faced after Rihanna's tweets underscored the kingdom's seedier side.

"Either I was phuck wasted lastnight, or I saw a Thai woman pull a live bird,2 turtles, razors, shoot darts and ping pong, all out of her pu$$y," she wrote in a message on September 20 to her more than 32 million followers on Twitter.

Last month two men were arrested for possessing a protected slow loris after Rihanna posted a picture of herself with the primate on a night out in Phuket during her "Diamonds" world tour.

Use of the slow loris and other protected species for tourist snaps -- while common in Thai tourist resorts -- is officially illegal.

According to wildlife protection campaigners, mother lorises are often killed while the young are stolen. The primates' teeth are also removed due to their toxic bite.

Foreign diplomats have urged Thailand to crack down on scams and crimes against tourists in Phuket.

Local tourist police volunteers warn against venturing into strip clubs offering "ping-pong shows” due to the risk of overpriced drinks and threats of violence against people who refuse to pay.

Mary Beard: Twitter bomb threat was 'scary'

The 58-year-old academic told BBC Radio Five Live: "There's something very strangely and awkwardly insidious about it.

"It is scary and it has got to stop. I didn't actually intellectually feel that I was in danger but I thought I was being harassed, and I thought I was being harassed in a particularly unpleasant way."

Hadley Freeman, a Guardian columnist, Grace Dent, an Independent columnist, and Catherine Mayer, the Europe editor of Time magazine, plus a number of other women, have previously said they have been the subject of bomb threats on Twitter, while two women have received threats of rape.

The Telegraph's Women's Editor Emma Barnett also received the threat.

Others argue that such a silence will hand a victory to the ?trolls? and misogynists behind the threats.

Ms Beard tweeted today: "Planned to be off twitter, but I've had more threats this morning (rape and worse). It IS still going on. Tried to report to Twitter, failed."

She added shortly afterwards: "Have reported to police. Failed to make the Twitter report form submit!"

The anonymous Twitter accounts from which the bomb threats originated were suspended, although screen grabs were widely circulated online.

Scotland Yard said an investigation into eight allegations had been launched.

Tony Wang, Twitter UK general manager, posted a series of tweets yesterday saying abuse was "simply not acceptable".

His messages came after the website clarified its rules on abusive behaviour amid a growing backlash over a series of attacks.

Mr Wang wrote: "I personally apologise to the women who have experienced abuse on Twitter and for what they have gone through.

"The abuse they've received is simply not acceptable. It's not acceptable in the real world, and it's not acceptable on Twitter.

"There is more we can and will be doing to protect our users against abuse. That is our commitment."

The company has updated its rules to make it clear that abuse will not be tolerated and has put extra staff in place to handle reports of abuse, it said.

Scotland Yard said its e-crime unit was investigating allegations by eight people of abuse on the microblogging site.

An online petition calling for Twitter to add a "report abuse" button to tweets has already attracted more than 124,000 signatures.

An "in-tweet" report button has been added so people can report abusive behaviour directly from a tweet, Twitter said.

In separate incidents, Labour MP Stella Creasy and Caroline Criado-Perez, a campaigner who successfully fought for a woman's face to appear on ?10 banknotes, were threatened on Twitter with rape.

Two arrests have already been made in relation to those threats.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Detectives from the Specialist Organised & Economic Crime Command have taken responsibility for the investigations into a number of allegations recently made to the MPS (Metropolitan Police Service) relating to allegations of malicious communication made on the social networking site Twitter.

"The Police Central e-Crime Unit, who hold the police national cyber crime remit, is now investigating allegations made by eight people that they have been subject to harassment, malicious communication or bomb threats."

Stomach Bug Tied To Farm In Mexico

Published: Friday, August 2, 2013 at 9:57 p.m.
Last Modified: Friday, August 2, 2013 at 9:57 p.m.

WASHINGTON | The Food and Drug Administration says an outbreak of stomach illnesses in Iowa and Nebraska is linked to salad mix served at Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants in those states and supplied by a Mexican farm.

The outbreak of cyclospora infections has sickened more than 400 people in 16 states in all. The agency says it is working to determine whether the salad mix is the source of illnesses in the other 14 states.

"It is not yet clear whether the cases reported from other states are all part of the same outbreak," the agency said in a statement. "The investigation of increased cases of cyclosporiasis in other states continues."

The FDA traced illnesses from the restaurants to Taylor Farms de Mexico, a processor of food service salads.

The agency said its investigation has not implicated packaged salad sold in grocery stores.

The salad mix may be out of the commercial food chain as the most recent known illness in those two states was in Nebraska a month ago. The typical shelf life for a salad mix is up to 14 days.

There have been more recent illnesses in other states. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the most recent illness was July 23.

Manfrotto KLYP for iPhone 5 review

With the introduction of Manfrotto's KLYP at the end of last year, which offered a continuous LED light for iPhone 4/4s users, it was inevitable that an updated KLYP accessory would quickly emerge for the iPhone 5. Cue the new KLYP, which in-keeping with its lack of name change appears to be very similar to its predecessor.????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

We reviewed the original product on its release and having spent some time with the iPhone 5 KLYP my experience has been eerily similar. The product itself comes neatly packaged into several separate parts including the LED itself, the housing case and the several adaptors.

Having not had the pleasure of assembling the previous KLYP it took several minutes to piece together completely, which as stated in our previous review is not ideal for shots in which speed is essential. Gone is the bundled tripod that came with most versions of the original, and in its place is the option of attaching a tripod (such as Manfrotto's PIXI) via the adaptor.

This is an unnecessary addition however and is not practical for the majority of the shots you will be taking with the KLYP. Having attached the PIXI to the KLYP setup, the result is highly unbalanced with the LED being positioned completely opposite to the tripod, making it disastrous to attempt to balance and making hand-holding a must.

The case itself has been redesigned somewhat, being made of rigid polycarbonate which should improve its resistance to damage. The material offers a silky smooth appearance and feel but still retains the robust and sleek look to better coincide with the iPhone 5's style. Whilst the case doesn't hinder any functions, it cannot be recommended as a permanent case, due to being easily detachable into its two separate pieces, and its thin material not offering a suitable level of protection.?

The main new feature for this edition is the support of the "KLYPAPP" available from the app store for both versions of KLYP which claims to work in cohesion with the LED to produce brighter clearer images even for video. The promotional video promoting the app however is almost comical presenting several individuals, wielding the KLYP and tripod whilst attempting to dance within a low-light club environment.

The ridiculous nature is apparent immediately and brings into question the true logistical uses for the product. Especially when the light given off from the LED is not adequate to produce crisp images within truly dark areas. Other features include the red-eye remover and the ability to "clap your hands to be in the picture" which may be wishful thinking given the level of visual and audio distortion likely to be encountered. The app itself may prove useful though in combatting the harsh lighting the LED produces.?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

The LED remains almost identical to the iPhone 4 version, being powered by 2 x AAA batteries which do not come included, which would be expected given the ?79.95 price tag for the bundle including the LED. The method for attaching the LED to the phone is a relatively simple process by tightening two rings which seem to hold it fairly securely.??

Whilst the batteries added to the weight greatly, it ensures that your phone battery won't be drained. There is a small dial located on the left of the LED which controls the intensity of the brightness, ranging from mildly dim to very bright, which would be greatly accentuated in a darker area. There are small icons on the dial showing the types of lighting for each intensity, however you'll have to judge each scene individually.?

One of the major elements of the KLYP LED that remains unchanged is its inability to swivel or tilt, meaning that the light must always be pointed directly at your chosen subject, resulting in occasional harsh lighting, although is useful for video in which a source of strong light is a must.

Whilst not re-inventing the wheel with this new edition of the KLYP, Manfrotto are successfully capitalising upon the growing market for amateur photographers and filmmakers using the iPhone. The KLYP has gone mostly unchanged in this iteration, but it still remains an expensive option for lighting subjects at a close range in low lighting and can only be truly recommended if this scenario is a common occurrence. The ability to attach a tripod is a nice touch, but doesn't necessarily work effectively when paired with the LED or fragile casing.???
