South Africa makes only $300K off African Cup of Nations, way off World Cup success

JOHANNESBURG ? South African organizers made a slim profit of $366,000 from the African Cup of Nations in January and February, way behind the huge commercial success of the country's historic 2010 World Cup.

Delivering the final report and financial results for the African Cup, the local organizing committee said late Monday that it also had exceeded its own expectations on the three-week tournament by about $305,000 having initially expected to make just $60,000.

The report "clearly depicts a positive financial position for the tournament," LOC chairman Mwelo Nonkonyana said.

More than anything, it underlined the massive gap between Africa's top tournament and the money-spinning World Cup, and showed how far the Cup of Nations lags behind in commercializing its product.

The African Cup was never expected to rival the success of the World Cup, but the large gap between the two was significant.

South African football was left with about $80 million from FIFA to develop its grassroots game following the hosting of the 2010 World Cup. That figure also did not include the money local organizers made off ticket sales. FIFA generated revenue of $3.655 billion from the 2010 World Cup and made a profit of nearly $2.5 billion, the world body said in its financial report for that year.

The Confederation of African Football hasn't made public its earnings from its biennial showpiece, but it projected in January revenue of just $10 million from the latest African Cup.

African football tournaments struggle with the continent's economic factors, where fans are generally poorer and with far less disposable income. Some of Africa's lesser-known teams also have little appeal for global audiences.

The LOC said the total attendance for the 32-game tournament was just over 750,000 with an average attendance of about 23,000 per game, less than half the average attendance of the World Cup. However, it was an improvement on the last African Cup.

South Africa also conceded that it had a very small budget to promote its African Cup.

"With AFCON (the African Cup of Nations) ... nobody knew what was happening until the last moment," South African sports minister Fikile Mbalula said.

Nigeria won the African Cup in South Africa for its third title, beating little-known Burkina Faso in the final at Johannesburg's Soccer City.

South Africa also will host the African Nations Championship, a tournament for Africa-based players, next year.

(AP) ? Pressing ahead in a new U.S.-backed push for Middle East peace, Israeli and Palestinian negotiators agreed Tuesday to meet again within two weeks to start substantive talks in hopes of reaching a long-elusive settlement within nine months.

Speaking after the two sides wrapped up an initial two days of talks at the State Department and visited President Barack Obama at the White House, Secretary of State John Kerry said Israel and the Palestinians were committed to sustained and serious negotiations on the "core issues" that divide them. The next round will take place in either Israel or the Palestinian territories before mid-August, he said.

Kerry said he was aware of the deep doubts surrounding the new peace effort and acknowledged that the road would be difficult. Yet, he said, "While I understand the skepticism, I don't share it. And I don't think we have time for it."

All issues, including contentious disputes over the status of the territories and Jerusalem, are "on the table for negotiation, and they are on the table with one simple goal: a view to ending the conflict," Kerry said.

The U.S. had already said the negotiations would continue for at least nine months ? roughly until the end of April 2014 ? but that had not been set as a timeframe for reaching a deal. Kerry and both sides agreed that neither would walk away from the talks or take actions that could disrupt them for that period, two senior U.S. officials said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss diplomatic talks.

However, the officials also said they expect that the Israelis, over U.S. objections, will continue constructing housing for Jewish settlers on land claimed by the Palestinians over the course of the negotiations, an indication the Palestinians are serious about dropping their longstanding demand for a settlement freeze before returning to talks. The officials said the U.S. believes the Palestinians also will not attempt to win further international recognition as a state until a peace deal is completed, an effort that one official likened to a potential "train wreck."

Kerry said that Israel, which agreed on Sunday to release more than 100 Palestinian prisoners as a goodwill gesture, would also take unspecified steps in the coming days to ease harsh living conditions in the West Bank and Gaza. The two senior officials said those measures complement a $4 billion private sector economic program that Kerry is trying put in place to assist the Palestinians.

After Tuesday's conclusion of preliminary talks, Kerry said, "I firmly believe the leaders, the negotiators and citizens invested in this effort can make peace for one simple reason: because they must." He said, "A viable two-state solution is the only way this conflict can end. And there is not much time to achieve it."

Kerry said the negotiations, to be mediated on a day-to-day basis by his new Mideast peace envoy, Martin Indyk, would be cloaked in secrecy and that the parties had agreed that he would be the only person to comment on them. He quickly added that he would not comment on them now, leaving unclear the framework for the talks that he struggled for six months to get back on track.

Despite the secrecy, the broad outlines of an agreement are well known: The Palestinians want a state based on the borders, with agreed land swaps, that existed before the 1967 war in which Israel seized east Jerusalem and occupied the West Bank and Gaza. Israel wants security assurances and a recognition that it is and will remain a Jewish state.

Obama laid out those parameters as U.S. policy for any negotiations in a May 2011 speech, but neither the Israelis nor the Palestinians have publicly signed off on them. The two senior U.S. officials would not say if either side had even tacitly agreed to proceed on that basis.

The main issues on the table for negotiation include security, borders, the status of Jerusalem, the fate of Palestinian refugees and water, all of which have been responsible for cratering multiple U.S.-brokered peace efforts over the past two decades.

Earlier Tuesday, Obama and Vice President Joe Biden met with the lead negotiators ? Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat ? for about 30 minutes. White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama called the meeting to "directly express his personal support for final status negotiations." Obama pledged full U.S. support to the process, Carney said.

At the State Department ceremony later, Kerry was flanked by Livni and Erekat ? who each spoke briefly about the need to resolve the longstanding conflict.

"It's time for the Palestinian people to have an independent sovereign state of their own," said Erekat. "It's time for the Palestinians to live in peace, freedom and dignity within their own independent, sovereign state."

Livni allowed that she and Erekat had been involved in failed negotiations before, notably the Annapolis Process that President George W. Bush initiated in 2008, but she said this time could be different.

"You know, Saeb," she said to Erekat, "we all spent some time in the negotiations room ... but we didn't complete our mission. And this is something that we need to do now, in these negotiations that we will launch today. And the opportunity has been created for us, for all of us, and we cannot afford to waste it."

"I believe that history is not made by cynics; it is made by realists who are not afraid to dream," Livni added. "Let us be these people."

Move Over Google Glass - GlassUp Is A Less Creepy And Much Cheaper Pair Of AR Specs

glassupRight now Google Glass sits at the apogee of geeky, wearable technology. ?Last month, interviewing?a Glass-wearing Robert Scoble, Newsnight’s Jeremy Paxman?memorably debunked it in his opening question as “that thing on your head. ” Getting non-techie people to view Glass as anything other than ludicrously geeky is going to be an uphill fight for Google. Arguably, though, even more of a blocker to Glass adoption is people viewing the technology as the epitome of creepy, thanks to its built-in camera. Sure a digital eye sited at eye-level lets you share a nice view of that mountain you can see from your hotel window. But in more everyday scenarios, it also lets you video your fellow humans as they go about their business, and that privacy intrusion is inevitably going to cause some friction. Throw in the whole NSA PRISM surveillance fallout and stuff like this is inevitable. Add to that, even though Google has banned (even more creepy) facial-recognition apps on Glass’s Mirror API, it’s possible to envisage a?workaround that leverages Google’s Hangouts feature — which shares real-time field of vision — to get around the bar.?Marco Vanossi,?co-founder of GeoPapyrus, pointed out this workaround to TechCrunch — and demonstrates how it can be made to work in this video,?creating a Hangout with a robot assistant called Dexter that then analyses what the Glass wearer can see. “You can share your camera view through a Google Hangout and the content in it (people, objects, places, barcodes, qrcodes) can be analyzed and identified,” he tells TechCrunch. “As a result, information can be overlaid on top of it and shown back on your screen.?This means that the Hangout app, built and distributed by Google on every Glass device, could be used to violate its own privacy rules.” All of which suggests there may be room for an eyeless Glass-style product that preserves privacy by being receive-only — and therefore can’t be accused of spying. Enter GlassUp.?GlassUp is a prototype pair of augmented reality specs?that does not include a camera. It’s currently?seeking funds to start manufacturing on Indiegogo.?The glasses are designed to allow the wearer to receive text-based messages and updates overlaid over the central portion of their field of vision — so while they intrude on the wearer’s vision, they can’t be accused of intruding on the privacy of the people around them. (AP) ? The driver of a Spanish train that derailed at high speed killing 79 people was provisionally charged Sunday with multiple cases of negligent homicide.

A court statement said investigative magistrate Luis Alaez released Francisco Jose Garzon Amo without bail.

The statement said Garzon must appear in court once a week and is forbidden to leave Spain without permission.

Garzon was not sent to jail or required to post bail because none of the parties involved felt there was a risk of him fleeing or attempting to destroy evidence, the statement said.

It said the train driver's license had also been withdrawn.

Garzon was questioned for almost two hours at the court in Santiago de Compostela, the northwestern town near where the accident occurred.

Garzon was driving the train carrying 218 passenger in eight cars that hurtled far over the 80-kph (50-mph) speed limit into a high-risk curve on Wednesday evening, tumbling off the tracks and slamming into a concrete wall, with some of the cars catching fire.

The Spanish rail agency has said the brakes should have been applied four kilometers (2.5 miles) before the train hit the curve.

However, a local resident who rushed to the scene of the accident said in an interview broadcast Sunday that minutes after the crash Garzon had told him he had been going fast and couldn't brake.

The resident, Evaristo Iglesias, said he and another person accompanied the blood-soaked Garzon to flat ground where other injured people were being laid out, waiting for emergency services to arrive.

"He told us that he wanted to die," Iglesias told Antena 3 television. "He said he had needed to brake but couldn't," Iglesias said. He added that Garzon said "he had been going fast."

In its report about the accident, Antena 3 television showed a photograph of Iglesias in a pink shirt and cap helping to carry the driver after the train accident. The station also aired television footage of Iglesias working beside the wrecked train to help other survivors.

In the interview, Iglesias recalled Garzon's words, "'I don't want to see this, I want to die,' that's what he said repeatedly," said Iglesias. "'I had to brake down to 80 and couldn't,'" Iglesias quoted the driver as saying.

Iglesias was among the survivors and witnesses who began to give evidence to police on Sunday.

Investigators must determine if Garzon failed to apply the brakes or whether it was a technical failure.

Spain's state-run train company has described him as an experienced driver who knew the route well.

On Sunday, the death toll from the train derailment rose to 79 when an injured passenger died at University Hospital in Santiago de Compostela, officials said. She was identified as American Myrta Fariza of Houston, her family said in a statement.

Fariza's friends and family had created a Facebook page while she was hospitalized titled "Hope for Myrta," where they collected donations and exchanged messages.

Officials said 70 people injured in the train accident remained hospitalized, 22 of them in critical condition.

Meanwhile, authorities said forensic experts have identified the last three bodies among the 79 dead.

Victims have been reported from Algeria, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, France, Italy, Mexico and the United States, but officials have not publicly identified each victim or his or her nationality.

Mourning continued throughout Spain, with Sunday church services being held in remembrance of the dead. A large funeral mass is planned for Monday afternoon in Santiago de Compostela, and the prime minister and members of the royal family are expected to attend.

The crash has cast a pall over the town, a Catholic pilgrimage site. Santiago officials had been preparing for the religious feast of St. James of Compostela, Spain's patron saint, the day after the crash but canceled it and turned a local sporting arena into a morgue.

NY Power Authority Awards $5.5 Million to West Seneca Firm to Support a NYPA-Niagara University Shared Campus Initiative

July 27, 2013 Updated Jul 27, 2013 at 1:58 PM EDT

WHITE PLAINS?The New York Power Authority (NYPA) trustees on Tuesday approved a two-year competitive contract award worth $5.5 million to Edbauer Construction of West Seneca, N.Y., to implement a comprehensive plan to upgrade and enhance the facilities, roadways and parking lots that connect NYPA?s Niagara Hydroelectric Power Plant and the Niagara University Campus.

The shared campus initiative includes the realignment and reconstruction of roads and parking lots, covering approximately 20 acres of shared property between the two campuses. Specifically, the project will improve lighting, grading and drainage on the roads and will also include the construction of a mile-long bicycle and pedestrian path that will connect NYPA?s Power Vista visitors center with Reservoir State Park.

The project will also add three security cameras to enhance the safety of NYPA visitors and students in the shared Power Vista parking lots. As part of the project, the university entrance-way will be redesigned and enhanced with a new rock wall sign, including lighting and plantings.

?From the standpoint of safety and security alone this is a great project, and it has the added benefit of opening up access to a host of recreational activities, that I myself am planning to take full advantage of,? said Harry Francois, NYPA Western New York regional manager. ?We are especially pleased that the improvements are being undertaken by a local business.?

?The Power Authority has always been a great neighbor to Niagara University and this project is just one example of the ways in which the university has benefited from that relationship,? said the Rev. Joseph L. Levesque, C.M., president of Niagara University. ?We are particularly grateful to have the Power Authority?s support with these much needed improvements to this infrastructure and our shared roadways.?

?We appreciate the opportunity to work on this project which will benefit the university and the many visitors to the Power Authority?s visitors center,? said Bill Bauer, president, Edbauer Construction. ?Our work with the Power Authority started in 2007 and has allowed our business to grow and thrive in Western New York and has also permitted us to channel significant economic benefits to a number of western NY firms we subcontract with for trucking, electrical and other needs outside our core business.?

In addition to supplying low-cost Niagara hydropower to Niagara University, NYPA and Niagara University have a relationship that spans more than half a century. Under an agreement in connection with the 2007 federal relicensing of the Niagara Hydroelectric, NYPA established a $9.5 million capital fund to be used at the discretion of the university; established a landscaping development fund worth $1 million; and transferred ownership of approximately 24 acres of vacant land to the university.

Work on the Shared Campus Initiative is expected to begin this summer and conclude by the end of 2014.

Real savings come through removing the need for NHS care.Britain is not alone in facing this problem. In the ...

And now, I'd like to turn it over to Don.

    Don Thompson

Thank you, Kathy, and good morning everyone. I?d like to begin by briefly framing our performance using three lenses. The past, the present, and the future.

First the past, because it provides perspective and guides our present and future. Throughout McDonald?s history, we respectively grown both the top and the bottom lines to varying degrees across a variety of economic and competitive cycles. We have an iconic brand an outstanding system of owner-operators, suppliers and employees and superb real estate locations in nearly every market around the world. This provides a solid foundation from which we operate.

Second, the present. In second quarter we grew revenues, operating income and earnings per share, despite the ongoing impact of the challenging environment. This is truly a testament to the fortitude and resilience of our system, our sustainable competitive advantages, and the collective focus on execution at our restaurants.

And third the future. We expect the dynamics of this cycle should persist in the near-term, namely flat to declining informal eating out markets, increasingly less ability to take price, cost pressures throughout our P&L and heightened competitive activity.

Our second quarter results tells story consistent with these lenses. Global comparable sales were up 1%, operating income was up 3% and constant currencies and earnings per share was $1.38, a 6% increase in constant currencies. And as we begin the third quarter, global comparable sales are expected to be relatively flat in July. Based on our recent sales trends, our results for the rest of the year are expected to remain challenged.

We remain committed to the plan to winning our three global growth priorities to optimize our menu, modernize the customer experience, and to broaden accessibility to brand McDonald?s around the world. This customer centric plan enables us to deliver an appealing experience by offering great tasting, affordable food and beverages, and clean and modern restaurants.

At the same time, we are diligently implementing thoughtful adjustments to our proven strategies and solutions when and where needed. This flexibility has enabled us to maintain or grow market share in most of our major markets around the world.

Let's review ours results in every geographic business units, starting with the United States, where comparable sales for the quarter were up 1% and operating income was flat. We continue to appeal to our customers with an increased emphasis on new news across our menu, and an ongoing focus on everyday affordable value.

The Dollar Menu remains a foundational component of our strategy to consistently deliver value across the menu, rather than implementing aggressive short-term discounting tactics. At the same time, our focus on enhancing core classics and offering additional premium products, continues to provide customers with even more variety and choices across day parts and price points.

This quarter we introduce new items across all four key growth categories, chicken, beef, breakfast and beverages. Premium McWraps launched in April, the Blueberry Pomegranate Smoothie and Egg White Delight debuted in May and last month we added fresh new taste to our Quarter Pounder Burgers with three new flavorful recipes, Bacon Habanero Ranch, Lettuce Tomato Deluxe and Bacon & Cheese.

From a comparable sales standpoint, these new menu additions individually met or exceed its targeted performance levels. However, softer IEO environment and comparisons against prior-year promotion was chicken and beverage activity offset the sales driven by the new menu news. And while June comparable sales were slightly negative in the U.S., we continue to outpace the competitive set.

In June, I met with our leadership franchisees while they were in Oak Brook for one their regularly scheduled meetings. While the challenges of operating a small business today are many, it is clear that we?re aligned and focused on what's most important and that's the customer. It?s that commitment to remaining customer centric, along with the assertive plans and vision we have in place, that enables all three legs of the McDonald?s system to grow sales and profitability for the long-term.

Let's shift to Europe, where comparable sales were down 10 basis points for the quarter and operating income was up to 5% in constant currencies. The U.K. and Russia continue to deliver positive results, while weak performance in Germany and France persist. The UK?s business remain solid. Second-quarter results and continued market share growth were driven by a balanced focus across value core new products, and promotional offers.

The U.K. launch blended ice beverages in June, just in time to satisfy customers? craving for something cool and refreshing during the summer months. The lineup includes two delicious fruit smoothies, strawberry and banana and mango and pineapple, and a line of frappes including Carmel and Iced Mocha.

Inspired by the U.S., these new products expand the overall beverage lineup and further validate blended ice as a proven system solution that can be deployed across markets worldwide. Russia also delivered positive performance for the quarter on top of last year's strong results. In addition to a focus on the Big Mac, two seasonal premium offerings, the Royal Cheeseburger and The Big Tasty with Bacon, contributed to Russia's performance and demonstrated the strong ongoing appeal of our brand in this growth market. We expect the lower inflationary environment in Russia to continue dampening our pricing power, pressuring near-term sales momentum compared to last year.

Moving over to France, comparable sales in guest count performance remain negative as the recession continues to pressure the informal eating out industry. However, we?re growing market share by balancing value in premium products across the menu. For example, France recently added two new recipes to the popular Casse-Croute entr?e and drink combo, they contributed to market share growth during the lunch day part. This value offer was complemented by a strong focus on two premium beef burgers, Le M and Le 280.

In Germany negative comparable sales and traffic trends persist. Our traffic has declined at a faster rate than the IEO industry, which also continues to contract. It?s critical that our initiatives resonate with consumers in this environment and in this marketplace. So to reestablish our momentum, we are leveraging recent consumer insights and continuing to adjust our plans.

Let?s shift to Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa or APMEA. Comparable sales were down 30 basis points for the quarter and operating income increased 3% in constant currencies. Although market share improved in China, Australia and Japan, comparable sales were negative for our big three markets. Positive performance in other markets like South Africa, Singapore and South Korea partially mitigated the overall segments decline.

Markets across APMEA are taking a holistic approach to stimulating demand. Across day parts there are offering limited time and innovative products alongside established price value platforms. In Australia, we continued to grow market share by balancing our focus on the core with new product introductions and promotional activities. Strong performance in 2012 including the launch of our Loose Change menu along with external pressures in 2013 from lower levels of consumer spending and high competitive activity have contributed to weaker performance.

In Japan, consumers remain extremely price sensitive. Comparable sales have been positive the last two months and we continue to grow share by leveraging limited time offerings like the Chicken Teritama and sharing options such as the Mega Potato to keep customers coming back to our restaurants and to build our average check.

In China, comparable sales were down 6.1% for the second quarter reflecting the negative impact from avian influenza which continues to dissipate. We remain focused on leveraging promotional activities to showcase the diversity of our menu beyond chicken and strengthening our connection with customers through our ongoing brand trust campaign that focuses on the quality and the safety of our food.

We remain confident in our ability to drive future performance in China. Going forward, comprehensive plans for our key growth areas particularly beverages, the family business and the late night day part remain our top priorities.

Around the world and across our system we are focused on ensuring our strategies and tactics resonate with customers. That's the key, the key to our performance, today and for the long term. As I mentioned earlier, our market teams continue to strategically and thoughtfully adjust their plans in response to local consumer dynamics and growth opportunities.

At the same time, we remain committed to prudently investing our capital and resources in those initiatives that will further differentiate us from the competition for the long term. We're broadening accessibility by adding new restaurants, we're modernizing our existing restaurants with reimages and remodels and we continue to deploy technology and convenience initiatives.

As our predominately franchised business model continues to generate significant levels of cash, our priorities regarding the use of cash have not changed. After investing in our business, we're committed to returning all free cash flow to shareholders over the long term, first through dividend and then through share repurchases. For the second quarter, we returned $1.2 billion to shareholders through a combination of dividends and share repurchases.

In closing I want to reiterate my confidence in our business and in the growth opportunities that exists. We are diligently focused on executing the proven strategies within our plan to win. We have a resilient business model and aligned and talented system and an experienced management team.

We're leveraging these strengths and making deliberate, continued progress toward winning this battle for market share and fortifying our position as our customers' favorite place and way to eat and drink.

With that, I'll turn it over to Pete.

    Peter J. Bensen

Thanks, Don, and hello everyone. McDonald's continued to grow revenues and net income in second quarter within the challenging global environment. The system remains focused on executing our strategies to become even more relevant to the 69 million customers we serve every day.

We continue to adjust our tactics where prudent and are committed to optimizing those factors within our control. Our financial results for the second quarter reflect these efforts to strengthen near-term performance while continuing to build our business for the long term.

For the six months ended June, system-wide sales increased 3% in constant currencies due to expansion. Combined operating margin declined 30 basis points to 30.3% over that same period, primarily due to lower restaurant margin percentages.

We are primarily a franchisor with 81% of our global restaurants operated by local business men and women. Consolidated franchise margins contribute approximately 70% of our restaurant profits. This stable, predictable income stream benefits from comparable sales growth and is more insulated from inflationary and other cost pressures.

For the quarter, each area of the world contributed to franchised margin dollars growing 4% in constant currencies to more than $1.9 billion. The margin percent declined 40 basis points to 82.8% as positive comparable sales were more than offset by higher occupancy expenses.

Global company-operated margin dollars declined 1% in constant currencies to $842 million for the quarter. The margin percent decreased 50 basis points to 17.7% as higher labor, commodity and other costs more than offset slightly positive comparable sales. The margin pressures for the quarter were most achieved in the U.S. and APMEA while Europe grew its McOpCo margin.

In the U.S., second quarter company-operated margins declined 110 basis points to 18.7% due to higher labor occupancy and other operating costs. The McDonald's system is effectively managing commodity expenses with cost up about 1% in second quarter. The full year outlook for the increase in our U.S. grocery basket remains at 1.5% to 2.5%.

The U.S. has been deliberate regarding pricing seeking to remain below the food-away-from-home inflation index of 2.2%. Another relevant data point is Food At Home index which is up only 0.9%, somewhat limiting our pricing power. At the end of June, our U.S. price increase was 1.5% which is about 120 basis points less than one year ago.

As we move through the second half of the year, we will consider future price increases balancing our desire to grow traffic and market share amidst the reality of higher input costs. In addition to pricing, we're employing more suggestive selling strategies at the order point to encourage trials, new products and add-on purchases. As Don mentioned, it's a market share battle so we're employing a variety of strategies and tactics to grow traffic and increase relevance to our consumers.

Turning now to Europe, company-operated margins were probably the biggest positive of the quarter as they increased 10 basis points to 19.4%. Europe's McOpCo margins benefited from the significant contribution from the UK and Russia, our two strongest performing markets in the region who contribute nearly half of the segments company-operated margin dollars.

In addition, France and other markets realized labor productivity gains as part of their overall efforts to control costs and enhance efficiencies within the restaurants. Commodities increased about 2% for the quarter and for the full year, Europe's projected increase is now slightly lower at 2% to 3%.

Europe is a collection of 39 markets, so our price increases vary by market with Russia at the higher end due to its inflation albeit a little less than a year ago and all other markets averaging about 1.5% year-over-year. Similar to the U.S. we have less pricing power in 2013 versus a year ago.

In addition, given the economic environment in nearly all of our markets we're balancing a stronger emphasis on value with compelling premium products to effectively manage average check and margins. We have a strong underlying business in Europe and we believe we are making the right strategic decisions and value investments to protect and grow the band over the long term.

In Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa, company-operated margins for the quarter decreased 100 basis points to 14.3% due to new restaurant openings mainly in China along with higher labor costs throughout the segment. To a lesser extent, avian influenza impacted our sales and margins in second quarter, but our team work hard to manage expenses and other controllables to mitigate some of the negative impact.

G&A discipline remains an area of focus. We seek to grow sales and revenues faster than our G&A spend. Year-to-date, G&A as a percent of revenues was 8.8% versus 9% a year ago, which included our biennial Worldwide Convention. For the full-year, as part of our ongoing efforts we have reduced our G&A spend and now expect it to be relatively flat versus the prior-year due in part to lower incentive compensation and efficiencies we have identified.

The growth in revenues and operating income within our franchise business model translates into significant generation of cash. As Don reiterated, our first priority for this cash remains reinvesting in our business to drive future growth and returns. In light of the current environment we have trimmed our 2013 capital expenditure forecast by $100 million to about $3.1 billion. Although we will open about 50 fewer sites, we believe this is prudent given the short-term pressures. More importantly it will not undermine our long-term growth potential and the quality and returns of our new restaurants remain very solid.

The remainder of our capital is being invested in existing restaurants, in part through reimaging more than 1,600 location?s, we?re making steady progress in our efforts to modernize our brand with about 50% of our exteriors and about 60% of our interiors on a global basis reflecting the current contemporary look. In the U.S. this year we will touch about 10% of our traditional brief standing portfolio through a combination of reimaging, rebuild and new restaurants, this will put us close to the 50% mark. Within the next year a U.S. customer more often than us will experience our brand in a more modern and relevant manner than before. We?re excited about the potential that this brings to our largest market.

Lastly, let me touch on foreign currency translation which negatively impacted second quarter results by $0.02 more than originally forecasted as several currencies weakened against the U.S. dollar during the quarter. At current exchange rates we expect a negative impact of $0.01 to $0.02 on third quarter EPS with a full-year negative impact of $0.07 to $0.09. As usual though, please take this as directional guidance only because rates will continue to change as we progress throughout the second half of the year.

Despite flat to declining and formal eating out markets around the world McDonald?s grew revenue operating income and earnings per share in second quarter. Our results underscore the solid performance, the solid platform from which we are operating. A unique franchise business model that harnesses the entrepreneurial spirit of local businessmen and women will operate approximately 28,000 of our nearly 35,000 restaurants around the world. The powerful alignment of our system around the strategies and key growth priorities that have allowed us to maintain or grow our industry leading market share in most of our major markets and a strong financial foundation that allows us to invest for the future while making prudent decisions to deliver near term performance. We remain confident in our brand and the competitive advantages of our system which we believe will continue to drive positive results over the long-term. Thanks.

Now, I?ll turn it over to Kathy to begin our Q&A.

Why is Paradise Under Her Feet? Mothers as Leaders

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/robbyimages/497075856/By Parisa S. Popalzai, PhD

One day I was speaking with a mother of five children about her life and aspirations.? After giving her a brief summary of my education and work experience, she slightly sighed when she said that she had to stop pursuing her college education to raise her children.? She described her role as just a plain housewife and mother as if it was something ordinary and unexciting.?? Knowing how well-behaved and sweet all her children were, I was surprised that she was so quick to dismiss her great contributions to society. ?Sadly I have met many mothers who have expressed such tones about their role as mothers and wives, wishing they had done something more interesting with their lives.? Moreover I have met other mothers who decided to put their careers on hold to raise their children and as a result felt a little disappointed that they were not able to pursue the career they spent years studying for. In each case, the mothers felt that while motherhood was an important role, they could be contributing much more to society if they were not hemmed in by the responsibilities of changing diapers, washing bottles and chauffeuring children from one activity to another.? However, most mothers underestimate the actual impact they have to social change and that what they do today with their children will affect the course of the future.

Unfortunately with our communities giving mixed messages to women about their role in society, it is not surprising to see such attitudes coming from the new generation of mothers.? Western societies tell us that freedom and honor for women are attained when she becomes an independent career woman, not shackled by the responsibilities of motherhood or even a stable marriage.? On the other extreme, our eastern cultures tell us that ?a woman?s honor and value are derived the more subservient and quite she is, accepting her role as the servant of the home?cooking, cleaning and ensuring the home and family are well taken care of above her own needs, education, and development.? And yet some societies go to the extreme to call women a temptation and shame that need to be hidden in the dark corners of the home in order to prevent the spread of evil in society.? In between these two extreme philosophical view points, the Muslim woman knows that Islam elevates and values her unique role and contributions while respecting and safeguarding her specific needs and nature. In all spiritual aspects, she is seen as equal in the sight of Allah subhanahu wa ta?ala (exalted is He) as indicated in the following verses:

?For Muslim men and women, for believing men and women, for devout men and women, for true men and women, for men and women who are patient and constant, for men and women who humble themselves, for men and women who give in charity, for men and women who fast, for men and women who guard their chastity, and for men and women who engage much in Allah?s praise, for them has Allah prepared forgiveness and great reward.? (Qur?an 33:35)

Yet regrettably in many societies including our own Muslim countries, women are still fighting for their human rights.? This mixed attitude regarding women has existed since the creation of the first woman.? In the Qur?an, Allah (swt) has shown us that societies? views about women are often wrong and contradictory.? Speaking in regards to the Arab?s contradictory views on women?making her a Goddess on one hand and a source of shame and disgrace on the other?Allah revealed the following verses:

?So have you considered al-Lat and al-`Uzza? And Manat, the third?the other one? Is the male for you and for Him the female? That, then, is an unjust division. They are not but [mere] names you have named them?you and your forefathers?for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance.? (Qur?an 53:19-23)

Allah clarifies that what cultures attribute to women are usually man-made and incorrect.? Women are neither angels nor devils, but a creation of Allah (swt) from the same nature and source as man, with every ability for good and evil as he has. ?Yet being the only one of the two who is able to conceive and give birth, the woman has a unique role and contribution to society that cannot be fulfilled by any man.

When Allah (swt) created Hawa (Eve, the first woman), He told Adam `alayhi salatu wassalam (may Allah send his peace and blessings on him) that Allah created his wife (zawja which literally means his pair or other half) with whom he was to live in peace and tranquility. Thus she is referred to as a source of peace and tranquility for the family and it was only after her creation that the first family could be started.? As such, her name rightfully alludes to her role as a ?container of life?, for mankind could not reproduce without her.? Allah (swt) created the relationship of husband and wife to be interdependent and complimentary, with each partner being a garment for the other. Unfortunately with the passage of time, falsehood and injustice prevailed in the world.? Alas women?s gifts to society were slowly disregarded and ignored and she was not valued for what she brought to the world.

It was only after Islam that the tides turned and women were again becoming valued and respected.? In Islam, she was not only put on equal footing with men, but her exclusive role was also highlighted.? The Qur?an often mentions the pains of pregnancy, childbirth and nursing that woman endure to bring life to the world. ?Therefore, Allah (swt) put the command to respect one?s parents right after the command to worship Him, and made a special mention of the mother?s sacrifices as described in Surah Luqman, Ayah 14:

?And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.?

The status of the mother was further elevated by the oft-quoted hadith (narration) of the Prophet ? (peace be upon him) which is cited in the Musnad of Ahmad bin Hanbal:

Mu`awiyah bin Jahima al-Sulami in which he came to the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) and said, ?O Messenger of Allah ? (Allah bless him and give him peace) I desire to go on the military expedition and I have come to consult you.? He (Allah bless him and give him peace) asked, ?Do you have a mother?? He said, ?Yes.? He (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, ?Stay with her because paradise lies beneath her feet.?

Scholars have shortened the meaning of the full hadith and reworded the last part to the phrase ?paradise lies at the feet of the mother?.? Through this hadith, it is commonly understood that by behaving kindly and taking care of one?s aging parents, particularly for one?s mother, a person will attain paradise.? Like many verses of the Qur?an and hadith, however, there is deeper and additional layer of meaning associated with this hadith.? It not only highlights the importance of taking care of one?s mother and meeting her needs, but it is also acknowledges her strong influence on her children as she can be the source to guide them to paradise. ?Furthermore, when Allah?s Messenger was asked who deserves a person?s greatest respect outside of Allah and His Prophet, the reply was one?s mother three times before one?s father.? This great respect for one?s mother is not unwarranted as she spends at least three-fourths more amount of time raising her children than the father and helps her children develop the characteristics to make them successful in life.

Reflecting deeper on the relationship of a mother and child, we know that the first nine months of the child?s life is exclusively spent inside the womb of his/her mother, completely interconnected physically, emotionally, and spiritually.? After birth, the child is still usually connected physically to the mother as she nurses her child for up to two years, and her child begins to learn from her speech and mannerisms.? Even after becoming self sufficient, the child spends more time with the mother who is usually the one who cares for the education, safety, and nutrition of the child.? Of course this is not the case for every family, but in majority cases, even with the advent of the career woman, the burden of the household and children fall 75% on the mother.? With such influence on a child?s development, a mother has a heavy responsibility to direct a child to a path that will make him or her successful in this life, but most importantly, in the afterlife.

This emphasis of mothers as leaders of the future Ummah (community) are clearly illustrated in the stories mentioned in the Qur?an and Seerah (biography of the Prophet ?).? In the entire Qur?an, one will not find any negative attributes associated to the Prophets? mothers, while on the contrary, one finds that Prophet Abraham?s own father died a disbeliever.? As the Qur?an lacks any information on Prophet Abraham?s mother, we can only assume that she was not like her husband and at least supported Abraham?s inclinations to rebel against polytheism at a young age.? We also know that both his wives were righteous women who mothered and raised great Prophets.? In the story of Hajar, we see that Ismael (as) replied to Abraham?s request to sacrifice him with ?You will find me patient.?? These were very similar words of patience that Hajar said to Abraham when he was leaving her and her infant child in the middle of a barren desert. ?Even as a single mother, Hajar was able to raise a son worthy of being a Prophet and to springhead the family line of Prophet Muhammad ? by ensuring their family rights to the well of zamzam and the Kaaba.

Additionally, the stories of two other great Prophets start with the stories of their mothers.? The mother of Musa (as) was a righteous woman and was given inspiration directly from Allah (swt) to put him in the river only to be saved by another righteous woman, ?Asiya, the Pharoah?s wife.? In his life, Musa (as) (Moses) was further supported by his sister as well as his wife.? Yet strangely there is no mention of his father.? Similarly, the story of Isa (as) (Jesus) starts not only from his mother, but his grandmother.? It is her prayers that were accepted by Allah (swt) when she gave birth to the mother of Isa (as).

?[Mention, O Muhammad], when the wife of `Imran said,? ?My Lord, indeed I have pledged to you what is in my womb, consecrated [for Your service], so accept this from me. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.? But when she delivered her, she said, ?My Lord, I have delivered a female.? And Allah was most knowing of what she delivered,? ?And the male is not like the female. And I have named her Mary, and I seek refuge for her in You and for her descendants from Satan, the expelled [from the Mercy of Allah].? ? (3:35-36)

There are several lessons we can learn from the story of Maryam?s mother.? First of all, while both Mary?s parents were righteous, Allah (swt) highlights the iman (faith) and righteousness of Mary?s mother as she had a direct role in deciding how she was going to raise her unborn child.? At the time of conception, she was planning and praying for her child?s and grandchildren?s education, upbringing and safety, to the level of even choosing an appropriate name for her daughter and naming her Maryam, which means someone who abides to Allah?s will and worships Him constantly. The surah (chapter) named Maryam further shares details about Maryam?s upbringing.? She was sent to the temple to receive the highest spiritual knowledge under the care of Zakaria (Zachary).? She achieved such a high spiritual status that Allah (swt) praised her as the best of all women (3: 42) and provided her with sustenance straight from the heavens.? He then chose her for a special mission, to serve as a miracle and a sign for her society.

Furthermore, while the other Prophets? mothers are not specifically mentioned, we know that Yusuf (as) and Ben Yameen (as) had the same father as their ten other brothers but a different mother.? As such, their characteristics were far different than their older siblings.? Even ?our beloved Prophet Muhammad ?, was cared for by his mother and two foster mothers (Halima and Barakah) for the first six years of his life.? While his own mother died when he was young, Barakah (an Abyssinian slave woman whom the Prophet called Ummi?my mother) stayed and supported the Prophet and his ?family even beyond her death. ?He was also cared for by his uncle?s wife and the mother of Ali, Fatima bint Asad, whom the Prophet ? also called mother. As such, we can see that the mothers of Prophets were not ordinary women.? They themselves had a high status in their respective societies; they had impeccable character, purity, and honor; they were wise with strong iman (faith) and goodness; they contributed their time, wealth and energy for performing good deeds; and most often, they were highly educated, as was the case of the best woman in the world, Maryam, mother of Isa (as).

On the flip side, the Qur?an speaks of the case when a child disbelieved in his father who was a Prophet of Allah.? As Nuh?s (as) wife is described as one of the two worse women who betrayed her husband (Qur?an 66:10), it is not surprising that her son would also follow in his mother?s footsteps in disbelieving in his father?s message.

Through these examples and illustrations, a connection can be drawn between motherhood and prophethood.? These are the only two professions that are described in the Qur?an as difficult and requiring an enormous amount of patience, endurance, and unselfish love.? While a Prophet has the role to educate and guide the contemporary society to the truth, the mother has the role of ensuring that her own children are rightly guided and educated.? Given the heavy responsibility of bringing life to the world and raising her children for the sake of Allah, Allah (swt) did not burden women further with the role of prophethood, military expeditions, or financial responsibility.? Yet the Prophet ? indicated that by caring for her husband and their children, the mother is equal to the role and rewards of a ruler guarding the country?s interests or a husband providing and guarding his family?s interests since without the mother?s care, the latter two would probably not have achieved their own positions:

Ibn `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Prophet ? said, ?All of you are guardians and are responsible for your subjects. The ruler is a guardian of his subjects, the man is a guardian of his family, the woman is a guardian and is responsible for her husband?s house and his offspring; and so all of you are guardians and are responsible for your subjects.?
    [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Thus we can surmise that in almost all of the historical accounts of great men and women, there is usually an untold story of a wise, strong, and loving mother. The stories of the Sahaba (Companions of the Prophet ?) also demonstrate this.? Sumayya radi Allahu `anha (may Allah be pleased with her) was not only the first martyr of Islam but she was a strong mother who raised her son Ammar to be among one of the first people to accept Islam.? While little is written about Hazrat Abu Bakr?s mother, we know she was called Umm Khayr (the mother of goodness) and the Prophet ? made a special prayer for her to become Muslim. Almost nothing is written about Umar Ibn Khattab?s mother, yet we know he had an idolatrous and cruel father.? Yet Umar became one of the best Muslims after accepting Islam, unlike his father.? And Hazrat Ali?s mother was one of the first to accept the message along with her son, while her husband Abu Talib died without pronouncing Shahada (the declaration of faith).? Fatima bint Asad loved and took care of the Prophet ? while he was living with them as a young orphan boy and the Prophet ? called her mother and named one of his own daughters after her.? When she died, he placed her in her grave with his own hands and used his shirt for her shroud, showing mercy and love to her as she showed him when he was a child.

Another famous story is that of the grandmother of Caliph Umar bin Abdul Aziz, who became a wise and righteous Caliph after the four rightly guided Caliphs.? His grandmother was a milkmaid?s daughter who refused to adulterate the milk with water in the absence of the Caliph?s presence, saying if the Caliph is absent to witness it, Allah is not.? Upon learning of her high moral character and faith, Umar ibn al-Khattab married her to his third son Asim, saying about her ?such a girl would become a great mother. Her integrity is not to be weighed with few coins; it is to be measured in the scale of national values. I shall offer her the highest award in my gift, which shall also be in the highest interest of the nation.?

While history books unfortunately ignore to mention the day-to-day sacrifices of parents who raised the great men and women of their time, we all know that people do not achieve greatness in a vacuum.? They had to learn to walk and talk like each one of us, and those initial early stages of their lives set the stage for their greater achievements and characteristics later.?

Likewise, there is also a connection between the infamous people of history and their mothers.? Muawiya, son of Hind bint Utbah, did not convert to Islam until after the conquest of Mecca and was, along with his parents, one of Islam?s staunchest enemies until then.? He loved power as much as his parents, and was willing to help kill Hazrat Ali for power and revenge similar to how his mother helped kill Hazrat Hamza for the same reasons.? Her grandson was Yazid, who was responsible for the murder of the Prophet?s two grandsons Hassan and Husain. While this family professed Islam, much of their behavior followed the time of Jahalliya (ignorance, pre-Islam).? Had Hind taken a positive attitude towards Islam, perhaps her children would have turned out differently despite Abu Sufyan?s own negative attitudes.

More contemporary examples of the connection between mother and child include Stalin and Hitler.? At an older age when Stalin asked his mother, ?Why did you beat me so hard?? Stalin?s mother replied, ?That?s why you turned out so well.?? While her intentions were to have him become a priest, her own actions as an adulteress and also living in a broken and violent family situation led Stalin to go on a different path.? A similar case was with Hitler?s mother and father, which started with adultery and poor parental role modeling.? Yet these two infamous men were close to their mothers who were their main caretakers as their fathers passed away or left early from their lives.

Furthermore, in my personal experiences working with parents and children, I see that children?s behavior resembles much more their mother?s behaviors than their father?s.? I also personally know of people who had embraced Islam, but later turned away from Islam fearing what their mother would say if she found out.? Her influence and the fear of her disappointment were so great that they gave up Islam for her sake.

Thus, we see the strong influence that mothers have in their societies.? Recent studies have also shown that there is a direct link between a mother?s well-being and education to a child?s well-being and education. Thus if a mother has a good upbringing and is well-educated, she will raise a child who is also well-mannered and educated.? Thus the Prophet ? has said that one who raises their daughters well and educates them will enter Paradise, as she will grow up and become a mother who will continue that barakah (blessing) in the form of raising her own children with the proper education and iman.

Adab, which is the etiquette and manners of goodness, respect, honesty, and integrity, is first and foremost taught by the mother.? Consequently, a child who sits at the mother?s feet?as young children often do?will also follow in her footsteps.? Thus, she can be a source of guidance or a source of misguidance depending on her own nature.? For this reason, the Prophet ? advised that when a Muslim man is seeking a wife, he should marry one who has sound aqeedah (creed) more than fixating on her beauty, status, or wealth as she will be the mother of his children and the future generation of believers.? Even with a non-Muslim mother, a Muslim needs to show respect and love since she has taught him something of value that has allowed the person to recognize and embrace the truth of Islam.

Like the archers in the battle of Uhud, mothers have a crucial yet sometimes unexciting job of protecting the Ummah from the stealth enemies.? If a mother leaves her station unprotected, chasing after the booty of this life, her children can fall prey to the media propaganda, peer pressure and other worldly distractions.? Mothers have always been the backbone of societies and their disintegration means the disintegration of the future Ummah.? While the term ?mothers of the believers? refers to the Prophet?s wives, in general all women have the potential of fulfilling the role as a mother of a believer.? If a Muslim leads even one person to the path of Islam, his/her place is in Jannah (Paradise).? Imagine the countless Muslim mothers bearing the good fruits of tomorrow. Thus, it is because of her suffering and sacrifices that she is forgiven every sin when she brings a child into the world, or earns her martyrdom if she were to die in childbirth or nursing.

In conclusion, while men and fathers strive to lead the current generation, mothers serve as leaders of the future generation. Consequently, if we want to foresee what the future ummah will look like, we must observe the state of today?s Muslim mothers.? If our ummah is serious about ensuring a better and more hopeful future, we need to first ensure that our current Muslim mothers are receiving proper support, security, education, and respect to do their jobs well.? When educated Muslim mothers, grandmothers, sisters, aunts and friends help in raising believing and practicing children, it is then that insha?Allah (God willing) the next generation will be blessed with leaders and scholars such as Imam Bukhari and Aisha bint Abu Bakr (ra). ?So when any woman discounts her role as a mother, I would like to reminder her that she is the leader of the future of Islam and that she is responsible for laying the road towards Paradise for the children at her feet.

India, China hold talks to resolve border dispute

FILE- In this May 5, 2013 file photo, Chinese troop hold a banner which reads, "You've crossed the border, please go back," in Ladakh, India. Officials from India and China have begun talks to resolve a longstanding border dispute against the backdrop of recent flare-ups of tension between the two Asian giants over their de facto boundary in the Himalayas.

NEW DELHI?Officials from India and China were meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday to discuss ways to restore peace and tranquility on their shared Himalayan border, a source of longstanding tension between the Asian giants.

Top military and foreign ministry officials from the two sides were examining the workings of a group set up last year to deal with incidents on the border and defuse them before they escalate into major standoffs, said an Indian official speaking on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to the media.

During the two-day meeting, India is expected to raise its concerns about incursions by Chinese troops into Indian territory across the Line of Actual Control that serves as an informal border. Officials will also discuss ways to ensure better communication between the two sides should any incident take place near the border.

In April, the two countries were caught in a three-week stand-off when Chinese soldiers moved deep inside Indian boundary. Indian officials have reported several minor incursions since then, including three in the past week, when Chinese troops entered the Indian side in the Leh region of northern India adjacent to southwestern China.

India and China have separately held 16 rounds of talks since 2003 to resolve their border dispute, without making much progress.

China claims around 90,000 square kilometers (35,000 square miles) of land in India's northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, while India says China is occupying 38,000 square kilometers (15,000 square miles) of territory on the Aksai Chin plateau in the western Himalayas.

The two nations face tensions in other areas as well. China is a longtime ally and weapons supplier to Pakistan, India's bitter rival. The presence in India of the Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama and the self-declared Tibetan government-in-exile irks Beijing. China is also suspicious of New Delhi's growing ties with the United States.

Despite the tensions, trade between India and China has soared, with China becoming India's biggest trading partner. Two-way trade jumped from $5 billion in 2002 to nearly $75 billion in 2011, but declined slightly last year because of global economic conditions.

India is concerned, however, that trade remains heavily skewed in China's favor.
