Hollyoaks star is blasted after train jump Twitter rant

HOLLYOAKS star James Sutton was slammed by his girlfriend ? after moaning at being delayed after a man jumped in front of a train.

And Virgin Trains bosses also criticised the actor, who plays John Paul McQueen in the Channel 4 soap, for complaining about the service.

Sutton, 30, was forced to apologise for his insensitive Twitter remark after his Liverpool to London train was delayed following the incident at Rugby, Warks.

He tweeted: ?Various trains to catch. If everyone could refrain from jumping in front of them for the next few hours, that would be great.?

But girlfriend Jessica Fox, 30, who plays Nancy Hayton in Hollyoaks, tweeted him: ?That?s somebodies child!!?

And Virgin?s tweet to him said: ?Some sensitivity would be appreciated, delayed or not.?

Electronic media reanimate magazine - Lifestyles - The Times-Tribune

While electronic media are often viewed as the Grim Reaper for traditional print publications, they also can breathe new life into fading titles. Such is the case with the former Life magazine, which now exists as an electronic publication at Life.Time.com.

Life became famous for its photojournalism, chronicling world-changing events, such as war and politics, as well as the popular culture of the day. Portraits of presidents, starlets, athletes and artists all graced its cover and inside pages over the years. The iconic image of a sailor kissing a nurse in New York City on VJ Day in 1945 first appeared in Life.

Life started in 1883 as a humor and general interest magazine full of the work of the best writers, illustrators and cartoonists of the day. It was transformed in 1936 by its new owners - who also published Time Magazine - into a photographic news magazine that was popular for decades. Eventually the magazine's circulation started dropping and it stopped and restarted publishing in various forms several times.

Electronic resuscitation

The printed version of Life has been deceased since 2007, but it has been reborn on the Internet. After brief partnerships with Google and Getty Images, Life now lives on as a photo website run by Time Warner.

The Internet always has had a split personality. On the one hand it's a valuable tool for research and commerce. On the other, it can be a mind-numbing time waster of incessant posts, likes, tweets and cat videos.

Life.Time.com exists somewhere between the two sides of the Web. While it's easy to burn up a good chunk of time browsing through the decades of photos in the site's archives, it's not necessarily wasted time. Because of the historical and cultural significance of many of the pictures, the time spent perusing them is a bit like research. You'll end up learning something in the process.

Looking back at Life

The website is basically just a collection of Life photo galleries, chronicling all aspects of life, going back to the 1930s. The galleries are organized into several categories: History, Culture, Icons, Curiosities and Photographers. Clicking on the links for one of the main categories brings up a list of clickable subcategories.

For instance, clicking on History brings up a list containing major wars, world leaders, politics, crime and more. Select Culture and you get numerous options including art, fashion, literature, sports, movies and many more. Icons consists of actors, actresses, athletes and musicians. Curiosities is a collection of images of unusual subjects, such as mutant bicycles or a honey bee market in the Netherlands. And finally, Photographers showcases the work of a long list of notable shutterbugs who have provided images for Life over the past eight decades.

Once you choose a category, a grid of related images is displayed. A large, featured subject is pictured at the top of the grid, with a series of smaller images arrayed below. Under each picture is a gray block with white numbers designating the decade the images are from and a brief description of the subject.

Click on the photo for the subject you want to view to bring up the gallery page. The gallery pages have a headline at the top with a large photo beneath it. The photo can be enlarged further to full-screen size. Forward and back arrows appear when you hover the cursor to the right or left of the image to navigate through the gallery. Each picture has a caption beneath it describing the circumstances and date. Under the gallery is an essay giving background information on the subject.

Easy living

Life.Time.com is easy to look at and easy to use. It has a simple yet dynamic color palette featuring a black background with white and gray type, and selected red text. The typography is unified with a clear hierarchy. The navigation is logical and intuitive. A search field and links to more Time.com content round out the site.

Viewing the site is a pleasant and even educational way to spend some time. Looking at historic events and notable people through the eyes of Life's talented photographers provides additional insight that just reading about them can't do.

Study links flame retardants in plastics to cancer in firefighters ...

So what is the problem with the flame retardants in our sofa and our insulation? Why do we want to get rid of plastic foam in our buildings? Flame retardants are supposed to do what their name says, namely retard fire. They do, to a degree; they were legislated into our sofas and mattresses in an era when a lot more people smoked, and they were designed to prevent smouldering cigarettes from starting fires. Once the fire gets going, they are deadly.Paula Melton at BuildingGreen points to a study by Susan Saw of the Marine Environmental Research Institute. Dr. Shaw explains in a press release:

Our study provides clear evidence that firefighters are exposed to high levels of cancer-causing chemicals including brominated flame retardants and their combustion by-products ? dioxins and furans ? that are formed during fires by the burning of flame-retarded foam furniture, televisions, computers and building materials. Firefighters have much higher levels and different patterns of these chemicals in their blood than the general population. There is no doubt that firefighting is a dangerous occupation. What we have shown here points to the possible link between firefighting and cancer.

The study itself is behind the usual paywall, but the key points are summarized. Doctor Shaw concludes: "The findings of this pilot study indicate that firefighters are at risk for cancer and serious health effects from their occupational exposure."

Given that the stuff doesn't effectively stop fires, and is as harmful to the homeowners as it is to the firefighters, why is it still in so many things? Why do people buy them?

Citizens for Fire Safety/Promo image

For one thing, the lobby groups are really rich and powerful, including the Bromine Science and Environmental Forum, (funded by Albemarle Corporation, ICL Industrial Products, Chemtura and Tosoh Corporation.) and the astroturfing Citizens for Fire Safety, (funded by Albemarle Corporation, Chemtura Corporation and ICL Industrial Products).

There are so many issues here. I wrote earlier:

The fire risk has been decreasing steadily with the decline in the number of smokers; the bromine industry is huge and they don't want to lose their market; the sofas are made primarily of polyurethane foam, a huge part of the chemical industry. If people were willing to invest in decent furniture that was made from natural materials like wool and cotton, which are far less toxic when they burn, there would be less of a problem. If the building industry would stop fighting the idea of sprinklers, there would be no problem at all.

Topographic maps illustrate where Twitter's bird flies highest

Not every Twitter user geotags their musings, but there are enough who do to generate some very insightful data. On its blog today, Twitter shared images from Data Visualization Scientist Nicolas Belmonte, who created topographic maps visualizing the density of geotagged tweets. The result is striking, as tweets clearly correlate with roads, geographic features and even lines of public transit. In addition to the blog's stills, you can futz around with interactive maps of New York, San Francisco and... Istanbul. When you realize the implications of all those tweets from the Bay Bridge, it's frightening enough to consider taking BART across the Bay instead.

Vinson, whose research concentrates on plant polyphenols and their effects on human health, said hello appears that green coffee bean extract may work by reducing the absorption of fat and glucose in the gut; it might also reduce insulin levels, which may improve metabolic function.

These coffee shops took advantage of your key scientific fact: green coffee beans keep for many years, but roasted beans begin to reduce their essential oils so because of this their flavor and aromatic qualities quickly. In the Sacramento and Davis regional areas, the University of California, Davis studies medical effects from the antioxidants in green vegetable extract. However, your bulk beans will still be costly, nevertheless they will last a much longer period of time.

For that reason the aim of this particular essay will be to provide you with a summary on what exactly this item is, precisely what it does and finally answer this kind of query - does green coffee bean extract work? What green beans extract does is to regulate our bodies's ability to break down sugar/glucose or carbohydrates, ultimately helping our bodies burn fat. Coffee beans are cheaper overall than ground coffee, along with the flavor is way better than ground. The proven fact that a coffee antioxidant exists might be true, nevertheless the reality is that coffee could be just as harmful if your body doesn't like it, should you consume too much, should you have high blood pressure levels, of course, if it keeps you awake at night. Jury in Colo theater shooting won't be sequestered

DENVER (AP) ? The judge overseeing the case against Colorado theater shooting suspect James Holmes says the jury won't be sequestered.

Jurors also will be able use phones and computers outside of court during the trial, but not during deliberations.

The judge issued both guidelines Thursday.

Holmes is accused of killing 12 people and injuring 70 others in July. He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to murder and attempted murder charges.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

Defense lawyers wanted the jury sequestered during the trial, which is scheduled to start in February and to last four months. They also wanted the jurors barred from having phones, laptop computers or other electronics devices.

The judge said neither measure was practical. He said he could take other steps to shield jurors from outside influence.

AP Interview: Moniz sees coal's 'significant role'

(AP) ? Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz says coal will continue to play a role in meeting America's energy needs even as the Obama administration seeks to reduce carbon emissions and combat global warming.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Moniz refuted claims by Republicans and some coal-state Democrats that the president's climate plan would cripple the coal industry.

Moniz said Thursday that the administration plans to offer up to $8 billion in loan guarantees for technologies that can keep carbon dioxide produced by power plants from being released into the atmosphere. Several "carbon capture" demonstration projects are now underway, and Moniz said he expects them to be completed by the end of the decade.

He also said the administration would move more aggressively to make factories and appliances more energy efficient.

IE 11 on Windows 8.1 preview supports HTML5 Netflix streaming right now

Netflix recently detailed some of the technological developments needed to transition from Silverlight to HTML5 streaming video in the browser, and in a notable turn one of the first companies on board is Microsoft. It's not that surprising since Microsoft has made it clear it's pushing other technologies going forward, but it's still a stark example of how much things have changed in recent years. Netflix's Tech Blog announced today that anyone running Internet Explorer 11 in the Windows 8.1 preview can visit Netflix.com today and try out HTML5-powered video streaming right now. Already available on ARM Chromebooks (pictured above), Netflix says Microsoft has implemented the Premium video extensions it's been working on to provide support for GPU-accelerated 1080p video, DRM and encryption without proprietary plugins.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra official with 6.4-inch 1080p screen and 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 chip, global launch in Q3 2013

Sony's unveiled its latest addition to its Xperia Z series, a new smartphone that blurs the line between smartphone and tablet once more -- the appropriately-named Xperia Z Ultra. Packing a 6.4-inch display that runs at 1080p resolution, it bests other similarly gigantic superphones that all currently hover around 720p. This new screen is paired with Qualcomm's latest and greatest mobile processor, the impressively potent 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800, throwing in 4G LTE connectivity too.

It all weighs in at 212 grams (over 50 grams more than the Xperia Z) but the body has been slimmed down to a mere 6.5mm uniform thickness, jostling with the barely-announced Ascend P6 for title of thinnest phone despite those high-end specifications (and screen dimensions). There's 16GB of built-in storage, 11GB of which is user-accessible, while a microSD slot will add an additional 64GB if needed. To power that screen, Sony has also cranked the battery pack up to 3,000mAh and we're hoping that will be enough for all those high-end components it'll be powering. There's no specifics on LTE bands just yet, but the phone also packs a pentaband HSPA radio, ensuring the global model will play nice on AT&T's 3G service, at least, when it launches later this year. We've got more details (especially on that display) after the break.

New York, New Jersey emerge as foreclosure leaders - Real Estate ...

By Orlando Lee Rodriguez

After years of being insulated from the distressed property crisis facing the single-family asset class, the New York City region now has one of the country?s highest foreclosure rates.

?The region is faring far worse than the nation in one important respect ? a growing backlog of foreclosures, resulting in a rate that is now well above the national average,? said economists Jaison R. Abel and Richard Deitz of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on Liberty Street Economics.

?While the foreclosure rate has been edging down in the nation recently, the opposite is true in New York and northern New Jersey. The rate now hovers around eight percent, double the national average.?

Legal hurdles recently implemented in states such as New Jersey to protect homeowners, can now make the foreclosure process take longer than a year.
Critics say the long process is partly to blame for the now extensive backlog of properties set to flood the market.

?Ironically, efforts to slow the slide of the housing market in previous years are now hampering a smooth recovery by holding back inventory of homes that almost certainly must sell in the future but are not yet listed for sale,? said Daren Blomquist, vice president at RealtyTrac, in a statement.

However, experts like Blomquist also say that a flood of distressed properties hitting the market at one time should not have too much of a negative effect on prices in the New York metro area.

?Even if all these homes flooded the market simultaneously, they would likely not cause the once-feared double dip in prices, given supply constraints from non-distressed sellers and stronger demand,? he said.

Part of the reason, economists say, is that a price bottom has already been reached in the New York metro area. Combined with a strong job market, prices should not fall, but won?t rise as fast as sellers may want them to.

?Given the strong connection between housing and local economic performance, this firming is good news,? said Abel and Deitz in their brief Foreclosures loom large in the region.

?Still, the growing backlog of foreclosures in our region may be exerting a drag on home prices and may well continue to do so in the future as more distressed homes come onto the market.?

Out of the 50 states, New Jersey and New York rank number two and three respectively in having the highest rate of foreclosure inventory. In April, New York?s rate stood at 5.1 percent, according to data compiled by analysts at CoreLogic. New Jersey?s inventory rate was 7.4 percent while Florida led the nation with a 9.5 percent foreclosure inventory rate.

In New York City, three of the top five neighborhoods for foreclosures are in Brooklyn. Zip code 11207, which covers parts of South Bushwick and East New York has the highest rate in the city.

Hunts Point in the Bronx ranks second highest while the Cypress Hills and Spring Creek sections of East New York rank third highest in foreclosures, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

But given that demand in Brooklyn is sky-high, particularly in the Bushwick market, where inventory in rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods has been tight, additional properties are not expected to put a damper on prices, just give more inventory options for buyers.

?The eventual release of these properties will be welcome in the market,? said Emmett Laffey, CEO of Laffey Fine Homes, in a release. ?Buyer appetite for foreclosed properties is at an all-time high. Investors will continue to swarm at below market deals.?

Garmin Monterra handheld GPS runs Android, ships in Q3 for $650

Garmin's featurepacked Monterra handheld GPS runs Android, ships in Q3 for $650

This technically isn't Garmin's first foray into Android territory, but it could prove to be one of the most successful. The navigation company's just introduced Monterra, a dedicated handheld GPS running a TBA version of Android. Basic specs are in line with what you'd expect from a mid-range smartphone, including a 4-inch touchscreen, an 8-megapixel camera with flash and geotag support, 1080p video capture, 6GB of internal storage and microSD expansion. Naturally, the display is optimized for outdoor use -- it's transflective, so you only need to use the LED backlight in low light, letting you conserve power during daytime river treks and sunlit hikes.

The device is ruggedized, with an IPX7 waterproof rating, and can run on either a rechargeable battery pack (included) or AA batteries. It includes WiFi, ANT+, Bluetooth 3.0, NFC, a built-in FM radio with NOAA weather and SAME alerts, dual-band GPS and GLONASS receiver, a 3-axis compass with accelerometer and gyro, a UV sensor for monitoring the sun's intensity and a barometric altimeter, which can report altitude and predict weather based on pressure shifts. There's also a handful of preinstalled apps designed to take advantage of this plethora of connectivity, including Europe PeakFinder, or you can download favorites from Google Play -- anything from farming aids to efficiency trackers can utilize many of Monterra's bundled sensors. The device is expected to ship in Q3, and should run you about $650 in the US or £600 in the UK.

Judge taking no action in Jackson guardianship

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A judge said Tuesday he will make no changes to the guardianship of Michael Jackson's children after receiving an investigator's report on their well-being and meeting with attorneys for their caretakers.

Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff ordered the inquiry after Paris Jackson was hospitalized on June 5 for taking Motrin pills and cutting her arm with a kitchen knife.

Beckloff ordered an investigator to interview Jackson's children, including Prince and Blanket, and report back to him.

Beckloff said he also met with attorneys for the children's grandmother Katherine Jackson and their adult cousin TJ Jackson, who serve as guardians.

"I'm taking no further action," Beckloff told attorneys for the Jackson estate during a hearing on an unrelated matter.

Perry Sanders Jr., an attorney for Katherine Jackson, has said Paris Jackson is physically fine and receiving proper medical attention. He has not provided further updates on her condition.

Sanders and Charles Shultz, an attorney for TJ Jackson, have said the judge's inquiry was an expected move and they supported his decision.

NSA leaker stays free in Russia

By Thomas Grove and Steve Gutterman

MOSCOW (Reuters) - China and Russia rejected U.S. accusations they helped a former U.S. spy agency contractor escape prosecution in the United States, deepening a rift between powers whose cooperation may be essential in settling global conflicts including the Syrian war.

Edward Snowden, charged with disclosing secret U.S. surveillance programs, left Hong Kong for Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport on Sunday. The U.S. State Department said diplomats and Justice Department officials were holding discussions with Russia, suggesting they were looking for a deal to secure his return to face espionage charges.

An airport source said the 30-year-old American, who has asked for asylum in Ecuador, had flown in on Sunday and had been booked on a flight to Cuba on Monday but had not got on board.

Journalists camped out at the airport have not spotted him inside, or leaving, the transit area, and say a heavy security presence has been relaxed for the past 24 hours. He has not registered at a hotel in the transit zone, hotel sources say.

A receptionist at the Capsule Hotel "Air Express", a complex of 47 basic rooms decorated predominantly with grey carpets and grey walls, said Snowden had turned up on Sunday, looked at the price list but then left.

U.S. officials admonished Beijing and Moscow on Monday for allowing Snowden to escape their clutches but the United States' partners on the U.N. Security Council, already at odds with Washington over the conflict in Syria, hit back indignantly.

"The United States' criticism of China's central government is baseless. China absolutely cannot accept it," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in Beijing, also dismissing U.S. criticism of Hong Kong, a Chinese territory, for letting Snowden leave.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov denied suggestions Moscow had helped Snowden in any way, including by allowing him to fly into Sheremetyevo.

"He chose his itinerary on his own. We learnt about it ... from the media. He has not crossed the Russian border," he said. "We consider the attempts to accuse the Russian side of violating U.S. laws, and practically of involvement in a plot, to be absolutely groundless and unacceptable."

Lavrov's insistence Snowden had not entered Russia implies he has not left the airport transit area, used by passengers flying from one non-Russian airport to another without going through passport control or requiring an entry visa.

The transit area is Russian sovereign territory, but it could be argued that in staying there Snowden had not formally entered the country - a move that could implicate President Vladimir Putin in helping a fugitive.

Interfax news agency quoted a source "in the Russian capital" as saying Snowden could be detained to check the validity of his passport if he crossed the Russian border.

Snowden is travelling on a refugee document of passage provided by Ecuador, the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks said.

Putin is not shy of celebrating people who challenge Washington, but has an interest in keeping relations with the United States on track as both sides try to improve security cooperation and arrange a peace conference on Syria.

U.S. DISCUSSES SNOWDEN WITH RUSSIA

Jay Carney, a spokesman for the White House, said it was Washington's assumption that Snowden was still in Russia.

Snowden, whose exposure of the surveillance raised questions about civil liberties in the United States, flew to Moscow after being allowed to leave Hong Kong even though Washington had asked the Chinese territory to detain him.

Snowden, until recently a contractor with the U.S. National Security Agency, had been expected to fly to Havana from Moscow on Monday and eventually go on to Ecuador, according to sources at the Russian airline Aeroflot.

There is no direct flight from Moscow to Quito, which has said it was considering Snowden's asylum request.

Ecuador, like Cuba and Venezuela, is a member of the ALBA bloc, an alliance of leftist governments in Latin America that pride themselves on their "anti-imperialist" credentials. The Quito government has been sheltering WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at its London embassy for the past year.

The airport source confirmed Snowden was travelling with Sarah Harrison, a legal researcher working for WikiLeaks.

"She (Harrison) came together with Edward Snowden from Hong-Kong on June 23 around 5 p.m.," the source said. "He had a ticket to go to Havana on the 24th, but he did not use it. She also had one, but she didn't use it either."

DEFIANCE

With Snowden's whereabouts a mystery, U.S. President Barack Obama, may face prolonged embarrassment from a young man leading the world's lone superpower on a global game of hide and seek.

Obama told reporters his government was "following all the appropriate legal channels working with various other countries to make sure the rule of law is observed".

But U.S. officials said intelligence agencies were concerned that they did not know how much sensitive material Snowden had in his possession and that he may have taken more documents than initially estimated.

He could publish more documents or they could get into the hands of foreign intelligence. The Kremlin denies knowledge of any contacts between Russian officials and Snowden, despite media speculation the security forces could be questioning him.

Carney said his escape would damage U.S.-China relations and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Snowden's activities could threaten the security of China and the United States.

"People may die as a consequence to what this man did," he told CNN. But to his supporters, Snowden is a whistle blowing hero who exposed the extent of U.S. surveillance activities.

Leap Motion Controller Hands-On: The Future Is Magic

Leap Motion Controller Hands-On: The Future Is Magic

Greasy fingers are the bane of touchscreens, obscuring the display behind snail trails of oil and streaks of grime. Forget that mess. Leap Motion has promised hands-free PC navigation for months now, and after some hands-on time we can confirm that the future is here, and it's amazing.

As a brief refresher, the Leap Motion Controller tracks your hand and finger movements in three-dimensional space, allowing users to recreate multitouch input without actually touching anything. You just wave your hands and wiggle your fingers in the air over it and boom, your computer responds.

Leap Motion Controller Hands-On: The Future Is Magic

It will be available for Windows 7 and 8, as well as Mac OS X 10.6 and above, when the $80 device hits store shelves on July 29th (though if you pre-ordered, it's out on the 22nd). It won't be available for mobile to start but the company is looking into potentially integrating the technology with a number of OEMs.

With a few waves of your hands, both native applications?from web browsers to Google Earth?and system navigations respond instantly to your commands. The company is also developing Airspace, an online hub for LeapMotion-enabled applications.

Leap Motion Controller Hands-On: The Future Is Magic

"Everything you can do with a touch-based system, like Windows 8, can now be accomplished with LeapMotion technology. We want our users to have a magical experience, with easy and natural movements in the air leading to amazing interactions. This is the foundation for our approach to existing systems," David Holz, co-founder and CTO of LeapMotion, said in a press statement. "But this is only the beginning. The potential for our 3D interaction technology is really unleashed by applications built specifically for LeapMotion, helping drive the future of computing."

Leap Motion Controller Hands-On: The Future Is Magic

I had the opportunity to try out the Leap Motion last week, and great googly moogly this thing is amazeballs. It tracks both hands?their position, angle, rotation, orientation, everything?in real time, as well as the positions and movements of all three joints in all ten fingers. The controller registers everything within a roughly foot-tall, 18-inch-wide dome-shaped area surrounding the controller and is wildly accurate, picking up even miniscule finger twitches. During the demo, used Google Earth to fly around Lower Manhattan like I was the kid from Flight of the Navigator, I played a 3D variation of Brick Breaker using my index fingers as paddles to punch, poke, and prod the ball around the arena, and I navigated around both OS X and Windows 8 systems by swiping my hands through the air.

It was strange, initially, getting used to moving the cursor without grabbing a mouse or tapping the screen but it only takes a second to get the hang of the process. The controller can also be set to use either basic controls (taps, swipes, and other common input commands) or more advanced gestures, which helps ease you into it as well.

Granted, I played with this device for all of 15 minutes in a controlled environment (LeapMotion's SF office) but that was a glorious quarter hour; I felt like Tony Stark using the Jarvis UI. July 29th can't come soon enough.

Brazil protesters vent rage at govt corruption

SAO PAULO (AP) ? A quarter-million Brazilians took to the streets in the latest a wave of sometimes-violent protests that are increasingly focusing on corruption and reforming a government system in which people have lost faith. A new poll shows that 75 percent of citizens support the demonstrations.

The turnout in Saturday's protests was lower than the 1 million participants seen on Thursday and there was less violence. But in the city of Belo Horizonte police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters who tried to pass through a barrier and hurled rocks at a car dealership. The city of Salvador also saw demonstrations turn violent.

The protests have become the largest public demonstrations Latin America's biggest nation has seen in two decades. They began as opposition to transportation fare hikes, then became a laundry list of causes including anger at high taxes, poor services and World Cup spending, before coalescing around the issue of rampant government corruption.

Many protesters were not appeased by a prime-time television address Friday night by President Dilma Rousseff, who said that peaceful protests were welcome and emphasized that she would not condone corruption. She also said she would meet with movement leaders and create a plan to improve urban transportation and use oil royalties for investments in education.

"Dilma is underestimating the resolve of the people on the corruption issue," said Mayara Fernandes, a medical student who took part in a march in Sao Paulo. "She talked and talked and said nothing. Nobody can take the corruption of this country anymore."

A new poll published Saturday in the weekly magazine Epoca showed that three-quarters of Brazilians support the protests. The poll was carried out by the respected Ibope institute. It interviewed 1,008 people across Brazil June 16-20 and has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

On Saturday, protesters denounced congressional legislation, known as PEC 37, that would limit the power of federal prosecutors to investigate crimes - which many fear would hinder attempts to jail corrupt politicians.

Federal prosecutors were behind the investigation into the biggest corruption case in Brazil's history, the so-called "mensalao" cash-for-votes scheme that came to light in 2005 and involved top aides of former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva buying off members of congress to vote for their legislation.

Last year, the supreme court condemned two dozen people in connection to the case, which was hailed as a watershed moment in Brazil's fight against corruption. However, those condemned have yet to be jailed because of appeals, a delay that has enraged Brazilians.

"It was good Dilma spoke, but this movement has moved too far, there was not much she could really say," said Victoria Villela, a 21-year-old university student in the Sao Paulo protest. "All my friends were talking on Facebook about how she said nothing that satisfied them. I think the protests are going to continue for a long time and the crowds will still be huge."

Across Brazil, police estimated that about 60,000 demonstrators gathered in a central square in Belo Horizonte, 30,000 shut down a main business avenue in Sao Paulo, and another 30,000 gathered in the city in southern Brazil where a nightclub fire killed over 240 mostly university students, deaths many argued could have been avoided with better government oversight of fire laws.

Tens of thousands more protested in more than 100 Brazilian cities, bringing the nationwide total on Saturday to 250,000, according to a police count published on the website of the Globo TV network, Brazil's largest.

In the northeastern city of Salvador, where Brazil's national football team played Italy and won 4-2 in a Confederations Cup match, some 5,000 protesters gathered about 3 miles (5 kilometers) from the stadium, shouting demands for better schools and transportation and denouncing heavy spending on next year's World Cup.

They blocked a main road and clashed with riot police who moved in to clear the street. Protesters said police used rubber bullets and even tossed tear gas canisters from a helicopter hovering overhead. The protesters scattered and fled to a nearby shopping mall, where they tried to take shelter in an underground parking garage.

"We sat down and the police came and asked us to free up one lane for traffic. As we were organizing our group to do just that, the police lost their patience and began to shoot at us and throw (tear gas) canisters," said protester Rodrigo Dorado.

That was exactly the type of conflict Rousseff said needed to end, not just so Brazilians could begin a peaceful national discussion but because much of the violence is taking place in cities hosting foreign tourists attending the Confederations Cup.

Brazil's news media, which had blasted Rousseff in recent days for her lack of response to the protests, seemed largely unimpressed with her careful speech, but noted the difficult situation facing a government trying to understand a mass movement with no central leaders and a flood of demands.

With "no objective information about the nature of the organization of the protests," wrote Igor Gielow in a column for Brazil's biggest newspaper, Folha de S. Paulo, "Dilma resorted to an innocuous speech to cool down spirits."

Outside the stadium in Belo Horizonte where Mexico and Japan met in a Confederations Cup game, Dadiana Gamaleliel, a 32-year-old physiotherapist, held up a banner that read: "Not against the games, in favor of the nation."

"I am protesting on behalf of the whole nation because this must be a nation where people have a voice ... we don't have a voice anymore," she said.

She said Rousseff's speech wouldn't "change anything."

"She spoke in a general way and didn't say what she would do," she said. "We will continue this until we are heard."

Rivers receding in Calgary, 3 dead in floods

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) ? The two rivers that converge on the western Canadian city of Calgary are starting to recede after floods devastated much of southern Alberta province, causing at least three deaths and forcing thousands to evacuate.

The flooding forced authorities to evacuate Calgary's entire downtown and hit some of the city's iconic structures hard. The Saddledome, home to the National Hockey League's Calgary Flames, was flooded up to the 10th row, leaving the dressing rooms submerged.

Bruce Burrell, director of the city's emergency management agency, said Saturday they are seeing improvements in the rivers. Dan Limacher, director of water services for the city, said the Elbow river is expected to recede by about 60 percent over the next two days, while the larger Bow river will recede by about 25 percent.

The improving conditions Saturday morning prompted Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi to tweet: "It's morning in Calgary! Sunny, water levels are down, and our spirit remains strong. We're not out of this, but maybe have turned corner."

Overflowing rivers on Thursday and Friday washed out roads and bridges, soaked homes and turned streets into dirt-brown waterways around southern Alberta. Police have said two bodies have been recovered and third was in an area that made it too dangerous to recover.

Alberta Premier Alison Redford has warned that communities downstream of Calgary had not yet felt the full force of the floodwaters. Medicine Hat, downstream from Calgary, was under a mandatory evacuation order affecting 10,000 residents.

As the sun rose in Calgary on Saturday morning it wasn't raining. Burrell said some of the 75,000 flood evacuees from more than 24 neighborhoods will be allowed back into their homes. He said the goal is to allow people from portions of six communities back into their homes on Saturday. Residents in a portion of one of those neighborhoods ? the high ground portion of Discovery Ridge ?have already been allowed back.

Calgary's mayor said late Friday the downtown area was still without power and remained off limits.

"It is extremely unlikely that people will be able to return to those buildings before the middle of next week," Nenshi said.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, a Calgary resident, said he never imagined there would be a flood of this magnitude in this part of Canada.

"This is incredible. I've seen a little bit of flooding in Calgary before. I don't think any of us have seen anything like this before. The magnitude is just extraordinary," he said.

"We're all very concerned that if gets much more than this it could have real impact on infrastructure and other services longer term, so we're hoping things will subside a bit."

Twenty-five neighborhoods in the city, with an estimated 75,000 residents, were evacuated due to floodwaters in Calgary, a city of more than a million people that hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics and is the center of Canada's oil industry. About 1,500 people have gone to emergency shelters while the rest have found shelter with family or friends, Nenshi said.

About 350,000 people work in downtown Calgary on a typical day. However, officials said very few people had to be moved out, since many heeded warnings and did not go to work Friday.

A spokesman for Canada's defense minister said 1,300 soldiers from a base in Edmonton were being deployed to the flood zone.

Police were asking residents who were forced to leave the nearby High River area to register at an evacuation shelter. The Town of High River remained under a mandatory evacuation order.

Schools and court trials were canceled. Transit service in the city's core was shut down.

Residents were left to wander and wade through streets waist-deep in water.

Newlyweds Scott and Marilyn Crowson were ordered out of their central Calgary condominium late Friday as rising waters filled their parking garage and ruptured a nearby gas line. "That's just one building but every building is like this," he said. "For the most part, people are taking it in stride."

Scott Crowson, a kayaker, estimated the Bow River, usually about four feet (1.2 meters) deep, is running at a depth of 15 feet (4.5 meters).

"It's moving very, very fast," he said of the normally placid stream spanned by now-closed bridges. "I've never seen it so big and so high."

It had been a rainy week throughout much of Alberta, but on Thursday the Bow River Basin was battered with up to four inches (10 centimeters) of rain. Environment Canada's forecast called for more rain in the area, but in much smaller amounts.

Calgary was not alone in its weather-related woes. Flashpoints of chaos spread from towns in the Rockies south to Lethbridge.

Sky Faces New Challenges From Coliseum Over Internet... | Stuff.co.nz

TIM HUNTER YOUR PORTFOLIO Sky

Getty Images

Play of the day: Coliseum Sports Media chief executive Tim Martin fronts the media in Auckland last week.

Sky TV's?shares staggered on Wednesday after a sideswipe from new football broadcaster Coliseum.

It was an interesting development for football fans, but it also showed how in the daily dance of sharemarket investment it takes two to tango.

When shares trade, every seller needs a buyer. And typically they will have different views on the attractions of a particular business.

Some will have seen Coliseum as the thin end of a wedge that will ultimately shatter Sky's business into a dozen fragments and end its reign as a dominant force.

Others saw it as just another lightweight hoofing it in a heavyweight game with as much impact on Sky as a rat on an open plan office - there is a frisson of alarm and then life goes on.

The net result of these views was a sudden drop in the share price from the $5.67 open down to $5.20, followed by a slow climb back above $5.43.

Sky has been a popular blue-chip stock for years and is firmly ensconced in portfolios big and small around the country. Perhaps it was no surprise then that initial comments from analysts and fund managers saw little impact for the pay TV company.

They are probably right. Some say the rights to the English premier league are likely to have cost Coliseum $2 million to $3 million. If so, they would be about 1 per cent of Sky's total programming rights cost - last year the total was $216m.

A Sky Sport package costs about $26 a month or $312 a year more than the basic package, and about 558,000 subscribers get Sport.

If 1 per cent of Sports subscribers were die-hard fans of English football and switched to Coliseum, that would represent about 5500 subscribers, or revenue for Sky of $1.7m a year.

With Coliseum's EPL subscription costing $150 a season, that would represent revenue of $825,000 a season for Coliseum, or $2.5m over its three-year licence period.

Using these numbers we can start to gauge the effect of the new service on Sky, and it looks like the football fan base would have to be large before it made much of a dent. In that sense, the share-price drop was probably a buying opportunity - a drop of 24c a share represents a cut on Sky's market value of about $90m, way more than the likely financial impact of the EPL rights loss.

But if Coliseum was not itself a significant problem for Sky, maybe it was the harbinger of greater competition for content as the internet becomes a realistic delivery system. This is an interesting question, and analysts were alive to it before Coliseum announced its play. A research note from Tristan Joll and Lance Reynolds at UBS last month declared Sky TV a "buy" with a 12-month price target of $6.30, citing an "earnings sweet-spot" as the company enjoyed the benefits of previous investment.

"Risks to our rating include entry of internet competitors, fragmentation of entertainment content and pressure on NZRFU rights at the 2015 renegotiation window," they said. But "all are factored into our forecasts, with declining content margins a fact of life going forward."

Greg Main, at First NZ Capital, was also positive in a May 15 research note with Sky "riding a cash flow sweet-spot for the next two to three years". His outlook was more cautious with a 12-month target of $5.70 and a rating of neutral, although there was some upside because Sky could offer a special dividend or on-market buyback.

Both research notes followed an investor day in which Sky briefed analysts on its current thinking.

Main wrote that the briefing "discussed and again discounted the risk of sports bodies going direct where the current relationship with SKT is strong (ie, SKT pays them a lot for their content already). While it could happen in some overseas sports with a small New Zealand following, the cost requirements and coverage required for the main sports makes this a harder proposition."

The potential for a Coliseum-type move was evidently well understood by Sky, and its view that local sports such as rugby were less vulnerable to internet competition looks justified. However, the presence of NZRU board member and former broadcasting executive Brent Impey at the Coliseum press conference indicated the rugby establishment is taking a close interest in developments. Even if Sky is unchallenged as a rugby broadcaster, come 2015 the NZRU, or its international equivalent Sanzar, may demand widespread internet distribution for the product.

Although we don't know how change will happen it would be wrong to assume the internet won't pose challenges for Sky. The comfort for investors is that the company has so far proved highly adaptable and can eye the future from a position of strength.

Last week's Portfolio column incorrectly stated Wynyard Group's expected revenue was $19 million this year and $24.6m in 2014. The prospectus figures are in fact $21.5m and $27m respectively. I apologise for the error.

APN may dump outdoor ad business | Stuff.co.nz

JAMES CHESSELL, ANNE HYLAND AND SARAH THOMPSON

APN News & Media, owner of the NZ Herald, is considering a major restructure that would allow the embattled trans-Tasman company to sell out of its outdoor advertising assets in return for full control of its radio division.

The company's radio business, which includes Newstalk ZB, ZM and Hauraki, is jointly owned with US company Clear Channel International, itself heavily burdened with debt.

Sources close to the company confirmed the asset swap was one option being considered by the APN board and new chief executive Michael Miller, the former News Limited executive who joined the newspaper, outdoor, radio and digital group in early May.

APN is in a difficult financial position after the company's two largest shareholders, Ireland's Independent News & Media and fund manager Allan Gray, rejected attempts in February by previous CEO Brett Chenoweth and chairman Peter Hunt to raise fresh equity.

The attempted capital raising, which cost Chenoweth and Hunt their jobs, would have diluted existing shareholders. But the decision not to go ahead puts more pressure on APN to pay down A$465 million (NZ$552m) in net debt, which represents almost three times forecast operating earnings.

"APN is over-geared, print headwinds remain, management flux is an unwelcome distraction, and the INM stake remains an overhang, in our view," UBS analyst Richard Eary noted in early May.

Under the preliminary proposal, APN would sell out of its outdoor business, a joint venture with Quadrant Private Equity, and its Adshell joint venture with Clear Channel.

The outdoor and Adshell businesses would then be combined in a new joint venture controlled by Quadrant and Clear Channel.

Sources close to APN stressed that there was no guarantee a formal proposal would be produced due to tax issues and the requirement of Clear Channel's banks to sign off on any deal.

They also noted APN was considering other deals that could strengthen its balance sheet. It is believed there were informal discussions about selling the radio business in late 2012 with Kerry Stokes' Seven West Media.

It is understood the asset swap was proposed months before Miller accepted the CEO job at APN.

While revenues at APN's publishing business are declining - broadly in line with other newspaper groups, including News Ltd and Fairfax Media - total outdoor was a strong performer with consolidated earnings before interest, tax, depreciations and amortisation of A$69m in 2012.

In New Zealand, APN Outdoor reported net profit of $2.5m on revenue of $26.9m in the year to December 2011, the latest specific figures available.

A sum of the parts analysis by UBS shows APN's outdoor division, including Adshell and Hong Kong Outdoor, would have an enterprise value (debt plus equity) of A$263 million.

The broker gives the company's Australian and New Zealand radio operations an enterprise valuation of A$262 million - although market sources argue the gap is larger depending on how any potential deal is structured.

Those pushing the deal argue the funds released by the advertising deal would then be used by APN to pay down its own debt and buy Clear Channel out of the radio joint venture.

APN's Radio Network operation in New Zealand reported a net profit of $12.5m on revenue of $123.8m for the year to December 2011.

Analysts argue APN needs to consider assets sales to improve its gearing if its printing operations continue to decline. Australian printing ebitda declined 30 per cent to A$39 million in 2012 while New Zealand printing ebitda was down 24 per cent (in local currency) to A$48 million as advertisers and readers defected to digital platforms.

"The continuation of declining print advertising and circulation revenues presents risk to this gearing forecast," Credit Suisse analyst Samantha Carleton noted in February. "In the absence of stabilisation in earnings, APN may need to sell assets such as outdoor or radio, and may have to accept a lower [earnings] multiple."

Clear Channel Communications has been restructuring a heavy debt load as it tries to overcome a hump of several billion dollars maturing in 2016. In May ratings agency Moodys confirmed the group's credit rating at Caa2 but said it needed to make more progress restructuring its debt.

"Even if Clear Channel is able to refinance its 2016 maturities, the company will remain vulnerable to a slowdown in the economy given the heightened sensitivity that its radio and outdoor businesses have to economic conditions," said Moodys.
